Emerging switchable ultraviolet photoluminescence in dehydrated Zn/Al layered double hydroxide nanoplatelets

2019

AbstractLayered double hydroxides show intriguing physical and chemical properties arising by their intrinsic self-assembled stacking of molecular-thick 2D nanosheets, enhanced active surface area, hosting of guest species by intercalation and anion exchanging capabilities. Here, we report on the unprecedented emerging intense ultraviolet photoluminescence in Zn/Al layered double hydroxide high-aspect-ratio nanoplatelets, which we discovered to be fully activated by drying under vacuum condition and thermal desorption as well. Photoluminescence and its quenching were reproducibly switched by a dehydration–hydration process. Photoluminescence properties were comprehensively evaluated, such a…

Characterization of Zirconium Phosphate/Polycation Thin Films Grown by Sequential Adsorption Reactions

1997

Monolayer and multilayer thin films consisting of anionic α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) sheets and polycations (poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), cytochrome c) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ellipsometry, UV−visible absorbance spectroscopy, reflectance FT-IR, XPS, and X-ray diffraction. Titration and powder X-ray diffraction experiments confirm that exfoliation of α-ZrP begins to occur when enough tetra(n-butylammonium) hydroxide (TBA+OH-) has been added to exceed single-layer packing of TBA+ ions (x ≈ 0.50) in the intercalation compound Zr(HPO4)2-x(TBA+PO4-)x·nH2O. The identical contrast of many sheets in TEM micrographs suggests that the suspension is un…

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural to 2,5-furandicarboxyaldehyde in aqueous suspension of g-C3N4

2017

Graphitic carbon nitride assisted partial photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) in aqueous medium was investigated. Different carbon nitride precursors were considered, being melamine the one yielding the most efficient photocatalyst. The obtained 30% selectivity of HMF oxidation to 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde (FDC) is higher than those reported up to now. A further thermal exfoliation of the g-C3N4 samples showed under artificial light irradiation both an enhanced photocatalytic activity in conversion of HMF, and selectivity (ca. 42–45%) to FDC. The performance of the catalysts increased when the experiments were carried out under real outdoor illumination, reaching 50…

Polyamide-Based Fibers Containing Microwave-Exfoliated Graphite Nanoplatelets

2016

Exfoliated Graphite NanoPlatelets (GNP) have been obtained from Graphite Intercalation Compounds (GIC) subjected to thermal and microwave treatments. Accurate morphological and structural characterization of obtained GNP, performed to compare the degree of exfoliation, show that microwave-treated GNP, exhibit well-exfoliated structure, without any reduction in dimensions compared with the native GIC, differently to the thermal-treated ones. Microwave-treated GNP have been introduced in polyamide (PA) through melt-mixing to obtain nanocomposite that has been subjected to elongational flow, with the aim to improve the nanofiller dispersion and induce GNP orientation along the fiber direction.…

Graphene-type sheets of Nb(1-x)W(x)S2: synthesis and in situ functionalization.

2013

Enlightened by the discovery of graphenes, a variety of inorganic analogues have been synthesized and characterized in recent years. Solvated Nb1−xWxS2 analogues of graphene-type sheets were prepared by lithiation and exfoliation of multistacked Nb1−xWxS2 coin roll nanowires (CRNWs), followed by in situ functionalization with gold nanoparticles to synthesize gold-loaded Nb1−xWxS2/Au nanocomposites. The Nb1−xWxS2 nanosheets and the corresponding Nb1−xWxS2/Au nanocomposites were characterized by high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning force microscopy …

Hybrid magnetic superconductors formed by TaS2 layers and spin crossover complexes.

2013

The restacking of charged TaS2 nanosheets with molecular counterparts has so far allowed for the combination of superconductivity with a manifold of other molecule-intrinsic properties. Yet, a hybrid compound that blends superconductivity with spin crossover switching has still not been reported. Here we continue to exploit the solid-state/molecule-based hybrid approach for the synthesis of a layered TaS2-based material that hosts Fe(2+) complexes with a spin switching behavior. The chemical design and synthetic aspects of the exfoliation/restacking approach are discussed, highlighting how the material can be conveniently obtained in the form of highly oriented easy-to-handle flakes. Dispersion and Stabilization of Exfoliated Graphene in Ionic Liquids.

2019

The liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite is one of the most promising methods to increase production and commercial availability of graphene. Because ionic liquids can be easily obtained with chosen molecular structures and tuneable physicochemical properties, they can be use as media to optimise the exfoliation of graphite. The under- standing of the interactions involved between graphite and various chemical functions in the solvent ions will be helpful to find liquids capable of dissociating and stabilising im- portant quantities of large graphene layers. After a step of sonication, as a mechanical precursor, samples of suspended exfoliated graphene in different ionic liquids have been c…

Graphene Oxide Carboxymethylcellulose Nanocomposite for Dressing Materials.

2020

Sore, infected wounds are a major clinical issue, and there is thus an urgent need for novel biomaterials as multifunctional constituents for dressings. A set of biocomposites was prepared by solvent casting using different concentrations of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and exfoliated graphene oxide (Exf-GO) as a filler. Exf-GO was first obtained by the strong oxidation and exfoliation of graphite. The structural, morphological and mechanical properties of the composites (CMCx/Exf-GO) were evaluated, and the obtained composites were homogenous, transparent and brownish in color. The results confirmed that Exf-GO may be homogeneously dispersed in CMC. It was found that the composite has an i…

Comparison between preparative methodologies of nanostructured carbon nitride and their use as selective photocatalysts in water suspension

2017

Carbon nitride photocatalysts have been prepared by different methodologies, such as chemical ultrasonic irradiation (sonochemical treatment), hydrothermal and ball milling and thermoexfoliation, and have been used for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (HMF) to form 2,5-furandicarboxyaldehyde (FDC) in water suspension both under UV and natural solar irradiation. The physico-chemical features of the photocatalysts have been studied by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and specific surface area measurements. The results indicate that exfoliation of carbon nit…
